Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve- History:
During the Nineteenth Century, megafauna populations in Assam were systematically destroyed as a result of hunting by British soldiers. In the early twentieth century, an Assamese animal tracker, Balaram Hazarika, showed Baroness Curzon (wife of Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India) around Kaziranga and impressed upon her the urgent need for conservation of the wildlife. Concerned about the dwindling numbers of rhinoceros, she asked her husband to take the necessary action to save the rhinoceros. Thus the Kaziranga Reserve Forest was created on 1 June, 1908, by notification of the Chief Commissioner .
Kaziranga was opened to visitors in 1938. After the independence of India, Kaziranga was declared a wildlife Sanctuary in 1950.
The Government of Assam passed “The Assam National Park Act of 1968″ in order to create a national park in Assam. Kaziranga National Park was established on 11 February 1974, with an area of 429.93 square kilometers.
Kaziranga National Park was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1985 for its large population of one-horned rhinos, tigers, elephants, panthers, bears, and many birds, and its representation of the Brahmaputra floodplain and grassland ecosystem undisturbed by man.
Over time, the tiger population has increased in Kaziranga, and it was declared a Tiger Reserve in 2006.
